11.06.09 - Aimee, Elijah, Iris, Maci and Uriah all got stuck in helping Dougal to rip up strips of newspaper to make a bed for the worms. The strips of paper sit on top of the “black stuff” that the worms love to wriggle around in. Dougal showed us what we could use from the compost bucket on our kai table to feed the worms. Iris and Uriah helped to place some feijoa, banana skins and garlic skins on the “black stuff” for the worms. Here’s some amazing things we learned today: 1. When the fruit starts to break down, bacteria will start to eat it, the worms eat the bacteria, not the rotten food. 2. Worms turn our food waste into worm castings (worm poo) and worm tea (worm wees) which we can use as fertiliser for our garden. 3. Touching worms can hurt them because the oil on our hands burns their skin, that’s why they wriggle around. 4. Worms don’t like dairy food because it’s oily and it blocks up their skin and they don’t like orange or mandarin skins because it’s stingy. 5. We also learnt that worms LOVE horse poo and coffee grounds.
